Blacksmith Electric has introduced a new brand of electric scooter known as the B4 to the latest electric motorcycle and scooter range. The start-up of electric motorbikes in Chennai, India, seems to have drawn heavily on the design of their previous version, the B3. In turn, the scooter was mostly based on their impressive B2 electric cruiser motorcycle, which was released in the summer of 2019.
Those earlier models were originally scheduled to be released in 2020. But, as we know, for many start-ups in electric vehicles, 2020 has different plans. The COVID-19 pandemic derailed Blacksmith’s short and mid-term strategic planning, delaying product launches by the firm.
But now Blacksmith says it’s ready to finally roll out cars in 2021, and by taking pre-orders on the new B4 and its delivery version, the B4+, they’re putting your money where their mouth is. Deposits that are refundable are now being accepted.
A neo-retro design is incorporated into the Blacksmith B4 and is powered by a 5 kW electric motor capable of 14.5 kW bursts. The top speed of the electric scooter can be 120 km/h (75 mph), although it can also be limited to as low as 60 km/h (37 mph).
Blacksmith is not the only Indian start-up that wants to break into the booming electric motorcycle market in India. In addition to several larger start-ups already delivering vehicles in the country, after revealing interesting prototypes, many other electric motorcycle companies are still in the race for production.
