Drone giant DJI makes a cross-industry foray with the launch of the ebike drive system – Avinox!

On July 3, 2024, at the European Bicycle Expo, DJI, a leader in the field of drones, unveiled an ebike drive system – Avinox, marking DJI’s official entry into the electric bicycle market.

Zhang Wenjing, Senior Director of Corporate Strategy at DJI Innovation, said, “Our expertise in battery and motor technology accumulated in the field of drones and camera stabilization systems has led to the creation of Avinox. It is a natural move for DJI to enter this field, as we have already mastered the necessary technologies for ebike systems, including reliable motor development, battery management, mechanical design, and engineering.”

Avinox Drive System: A Combination of Power and Intelligence

The DJI Avinox ebike drive system weighs only 2.52 kg, with a size comparable to a human palm, delivering a torque of up to 105Nm and a rated power of 250W, with a maximum power output of 850W. It can provide ample power in a timely manner to match various riding conditions; the innovative dual-planet gear structure achieves a revolutionary balance in the side profile, weight, and power output of the entire drive unit, and provides possibilities for vehicle design that combines high torque and lightweight.

In addition to the three conventional assist modes of Eco, Trail, and Turbo, the DJI Avinox system uniquely features an Auto mode that automatically adjusts the assist output according to real-time road conditions and riding posture. Even with variable road conditions, there is no need to switch assist modes manually. When facing very challenging road conditions, the quick activation of Boost mode becomes a valuable aid for riders, providing up to 30 seconds of 120Nm assist torque and an instantaneous maximum output power of 1000W. Moreover, the vehicle display can synchronize parameters adjusted via the mobile app, such as assist unit level, maximum torque, start pedal response, and continuous pedal response, allowing users to customize their assist style.

At the same time, the Avinox ebike drive system is equipped with an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and a high-resolution wheel speed sensor, bringing a more intelligent pushing function. “Auto Hold” ensures that the vehicle stops on slopes without rolling back when pushing; “Hill Start Assist” provides an additional torque to counteract gravity when the vehicle starts uphill on a slope, assisting the rider to start easily.

Long-lasting Endurance and Rapid Charging

Endurance capacity is one of the important indicators to measure the performance of electric bicycles. The Avinox ebike drive system offers two battery versions of 600Wh and 800Wh for users to choose from, corresponding to a range of 117 kilometers and 157 kilometers, respectively. This means that whether it is daily commuting or weekend outings, Avinox can meet the endurance needs of users. At the same time, the battery also has an IP56 protection level and a comprehensive health management system function, effectively extending the service life of the battery.

In terms of charging, Avinox also shows its high efficiency and convenience. Its fast charger adopts the advanced gallium nitride technology, with a maximum charging power of 508W. This means that an 800Wh battery can be charged from 0% to 75% in about 1.5 hours, greatly reducing the charging waiting time.

Interactive Experience and Intelligent Interconnection

The interactive center of the Avinox ebike drive system is a 2-inch OLED color screen. This screen is not only bright and can automatically adjust according to different lighting environments but also has characteristics such as dustproof, waterproof, and anti-glare. Users can view real-time riding data such as exercise time, riding distance, average speed, and nearly 50 items of data recording through this screen. At the same time, users can also customize the display content of the central control screen through the Avinox App to meet personalized needs.

What’s more considerate is that the Avinox ebike drive system also achieves deep interaction with users through the mobile app. Users can easily adjust the assist unit level, maximum torque, and other parameters in the App, and synchronize these settings to the central control screen for display, creating a personalized assist style.

Intelligent Reminders and Self-assisted Troubleshooting

In addition, the Avinox ebike drive system is also adapted to the mobile software Avinox. After the mobile phone and the system are paired via Bluetooth, the App can provide users with intelligent functions such as vehicle safety protection, data recording and sharing, and assist parameter adjustment. If a fault is detected in the ebike drive system, the system will pop up a reminder on the central control screen and emit a beep to alert the user. Users can view the detailed fault status through the Avinox App and also self-assisted troubleshoot according to the self-test suggestions.

The sub-brand Amflow PL incubated by DJI has launched its first mountain bike equipped with the DJI Avinox ebike drive system. The bike features a lightweight carbon fiber frame that not only reduces the weight of the vehicle but also enhances the overall strength and stability. With a lightweight frame of 19.2 kilograms, it provides a peak power of 850W, surpassing full-power bicycles in both power output and range. DJI stated to foreign media that DJI Amflow PL will be available in the fourth quarter of 2024, with a price estimated to be between 7000 euros and 12000 euros.
